Empties & Tosses #19 // September - December 2015 (home)

In addition to the products that I finished up at school, by the end of the year I had a bunch of emptied things laying around at my parents' house. Here's what I finished up:

Best in Beauty 2015 - Makeup, Skin & Body

I don't do monthly favourites but as you may have guessed, I try a lot of things. Once I find something that I like, I stick to it and will only replace it if I find something significantly better. These are the products that stuck this year. Note that these didn't all launched in 2015 (most of them are) but they're things that I've come to love this year. So, here are my favourite beauty product discoveries of 2015:

Empties & Tosses #18 // School (September to December 2015)

2015 was a hell of a long year. The last 4 months of the year got busy, so I took a pause on the monthly empties posts and put together all the products I used up here. This is first of my end-of-year empties. The other batch is back at home in Toronto and I'll be posting about that stuff shortly! On to the empties!

Makeup Collection & Storage // 2015

Per the request of Jessie of Bijou-Heart, I've photographed how I organize my makeup. I'm not going to go through everything product-by-product but I'll highlight the important bits. So.. here's a peek into my makeup collection and storage...

Indie Polish New Years Trio // Rose Gold Nights, Make 2016 Epic, New Year New You

Indie Polish is an independent polish brand that is 5-free and hand mixed in Toronto. Even since my beginnings as a blogger, I loved Indie Polish's unique collections and concoctions of strange glitters, textures and colours. For the 2016 New Year, Indie Polish has released a three-piece collection dubbed the "New Years Trio"($11.50 each for full-size, $4.75 each for mini).

UPDATE: THEFACESHOP Beauty Advent Calendar // Holiday 2015 #24DaysofTHEFACESHOP

24 Days of THEFACESHOP have come and gone. To be honest, I couldn't resist ripping apart ALL of the boxes of THEFACESHOP Beauty Advent Calendar 2015 ($69)  after my last final exam on December 14th, which is why after that day there were no SnapChat updates. SORRY NOT SORRY. Anyways, from hand creams to brow pencils to nail polish, I've collectively reviewed a majority of the 24 products contained in the calendar:

Sephora Color Wonderland Neutral & Vivid Eyeshadow Palette // Holiday 2015

The Sephora Color Wonderland Neutral & Vivid Eyeshadow Palette ($74, limited edition + exclusively at Sephora) is the motherlode of all eyeshadow palettes. With 78 eyeshadows, 2 eyeliners and one dual-ended brush, it packs a serious punch.

Mary Kay Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush

Yet another gift idea from the Mary Kay Holiday 2015 collection is the Mary Kay Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush ($60, limited edition). The set includes 1 cleansing brush (in white or purple), 2 brush heads, 2 AA Batteries. There's also the option to purchase a Mary Kay Cleansing Brush Travel Bag ($5). It's decorated with the words Love (in several different languages) and MK. I'm preferential to plain, solid coloured bags so I'm not the biggest fan of the travel bag. But to each their own! Aesthetics aside, it's the perfect size for protecting the Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush.

Mary Kay says that the Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush removes makeup 85% better than using your hands. Any skincare tool is better than washing your face with your hands, so it's already a good thing.

The very first thought that came to mind when seeing this brush in my mail box was how does this compare to the Clarsonic? In all honesty, after you go Clarisonic, you can't go back. The Clarisonic is such an intense cleanse with micro-vibrations that my pores feel as though they're being turned inside out and scrubbed clean. On the other hand, the Mary Kay Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush uses larger circular motions with fewer speed options and no timer. The Skinvigorate might be better for sensitive skin if you've tried the Clarisonic and found it to be too harsh. What's also nicer about the Skinvigorate Cleansing Brush is that it's much lighter in the hand and thus, much easier to travel with.

That being said, the Clarisonic Smart Profile retails for $299, which is 5x as expensive. Even though the Mary Kay Skinvigorate doesn't have all of the details as the Clarisonic, it gets the job done. It's a budget-friendly cleansing brush and a great gift for someone who is just getting into skincare technology.

Which cleansing brushes have you tried?

Do I have a swatch-a-thon for you. This weekend, I tried on all 18 of the OPI Starlight Collection nail polishes for Holiday 2015 ($9.95 each). Inspired by the celestial beauty of the galaxy, the OPI Starlight Collection features rich colour, jewel tones, glitters and metallics.

#ManiMonday - Polar Bear Nail Art // Holiday 2015

What's cuter than a polar bear in a scarf? NOTHING. Okay maybe a plethora of other baby animals, but polar bears are particularly cute and festive around this time of year.

Sears Beauty Holiday Look // #12DaysofGiving #SearsBeautyEvent // Holiday 2015

Annually, Sears hosts their Holiday Beauty Event, where funds are donated to Look Good, Feel Better - Canada's only charitable cancer program dedicated to empowering women to managing the effects the cancer and its treatment can have on their appearance - to support programs for young women 12-18 years old as part of Sears support to children living with and beyond cancer.

I wasn't able to attend the event this year (screw you exams!) but Sears was generous in sending me a few products to review.

Sweater Weather Nail Art 2.0 // Holiday 2015

Tis the season for holiday coffee cups at Starbucks and Tim Hortons. I don't even drink coffee regularly but during this time of year, the cute (and recyclable) coffee cups are enough to sacrifice my low caffeine tolerance for a piece of cardboard.

Sephora Color Around the World Eye & Face Palettes // Holiday 2015

The Sephora Collection Color Around the World ($35) is a set of four colour co-ordinated palettes with four eyeshadows and one blush/bronzer in each corresponding to destinations of Paris, New York, Rome and Rio.

The packaging is adorable. They're not the most sleek or refined - but they're super cute. Each notebook-like palette is brightly coloured and decorated with landmarks and items that are reminiscent of the different destinations - the Empire State Building in NYC, the Coliseum in Rome, the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio, and the Champs Elysees and Eiffel Tower  in Paris. Each palette contains get-the-look instructions and a small mirror.

Stocking Stuffers // Holiday 2015

My family was never really one for stocking stuffers but I always enjoyed the thought of having a sock filled with goodies.  Below are a few beauty-related stocking filler ideas.

Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color Quads in Black Ice and Chai Latte // Holiday 2015

In case you didn't know, the Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color Quad Eyeshadows ($19 each, limited edition) are the Last year, I raved about the very similar Mineral Eye Color Quads in Sandstorm and Autumn Leaves. This year, Mary Kay came out with the quads Black Ice and Chai Latte and they are just as good as their predecessors.

#ManiMonday - Penguin Nail Art // Holiday 2015

Festive nail art is coming your way. This week, I've got five new penguin friends.

Despite the potential complexity of fitting an entire animal on your nail, a penguin is actually quite easy. A black base, freehanded white oval and eyes/feet/nose drawn out with a baby brush or dotting tool. She Who Does Nails has a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial on how to achieve these cute little birdy guys on your fingertips.

What animals remind you of winter? Any wintery nail art requests?

Le Petit Tresor means the little treasure in French. But don't let the name of the gift set fool you. The contents of Too Faced Le Petit Tresor Set ($36, online only) are by no means small. The glittery turquoise bag contains three full-sized Too Faced La Creme Color Drenched Lip Creams.

Make Up For Ever Lash Show Collection in N-202 and C-804

New in false lashes is the MAKE UP FOR EVER Lash Show Collection ($22 each). After many a pair of KISS, Ardell and even some artistic Shu Uemura false lashes and mink lashes, I'm no longer a stranger to the delicate bands of hair.

My general thoughts on lashes are that you shouldn't have to pay more than $10 for a decent pair of natural looking, synthetic falsies that can be reused multiple times. The more dramatic and more refined the materials, the more likely that a higher price tag will be worth the value. I don't wear false lashes every day but I love individual lashes for special occasions and dramatic/artistic lashes for makeup looks (re: Shu Uemura Peacock Inspired Makeup).

Sephora Collection Glitter Happy Brush Set // Holiday 2015

I have too many makeup brushes (said no woman ever). All my brushes are currently dirty, so I've been using the Sephora Collection Glitter Happy Brush Set ($85 USD, limited edition at Sephora), which includes enough brushes to cover my eyes, lips and face.
